Kristi S. Anseth - Dynamically Tunable Materials to Study and Direct Cell Function
A better understanding of the dynamic physical and biomolecular cues in the stem cell niche has led to a growing interest in the development of material systems for improved 3D culture environments, as well as delivery vehicles to promote cell survival and differentiation. As a result, hydrogels based on both protein components (e.g., collagen and Matrigel) and highly-tunable synthetic chemistries (e.g., PEG) have evolved to address many of these needs. However, as advances in real-time tracking of dynamic cellular functions have emerged, complementary approaches to alter the surrounding extracellular environment in a user-defined and highly-controlled fashion are extremely limited. Such materials systems would have the potential to significantly improve our understanding of how cells receive information from their microenvironment and the role that these dynamic processes may play in biological questions related to their renewal and differentiation. Towards the goal of developing a dynamically tunable scaffold, we recently reported an approach for in situ hydrogel property manipulation with light, allowing intimate control of a cell’s microenvironment in both time and space. These photoactive hydrogels afford unique user-defined manipulation of the biochemical and biomechanical nature of the extracellular microenvironment. This talk will present several examples where user-triggered changes in the material environment can be used to both better understand and direct the function of bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells.

Nano Summit 2007
The Nano Summit provides a forum for medical, engineering and natural science researchers and students to meet and exchange information on their areas of expertise. The summit informs the research community about major research activities related to nanoscience. The conference is also useful to corporate R&D persons to gain a better understanding of the research being done on basic nanotechnology including material science, life sciences, energy and electronic/semiconductor applications.
The Alliance for NanoHealth’s 1st General Meeting
Dr. Mauro Ferrari will deliver the State of the Alliance Address summarizing the current status of the Alliance as well as several new exciting developments, such as opportunities for centers of excellence sponsored by DARPA, upcoming workshops and seminars, and new partnerships and collaborations such as with the FDA, that will strengthen our leadership role for the advancement of nanotechnology and public health.
Translational Optical Molecular Imaging: Nano to Macro
There is a critical need to translate research and optical systems development to produce medical products that are robust, portable, and cost-effective. Recent progress in translational optical imaging relies on the synthesis of knowledge from many fields including fundamental optical science, medicine, chemical and biomedical engineering, and medical imaging and device technology. Combining diagnostic imaging with molecular characterization of disease is producing new trends that are sharpening perspectives; and producing practical techniques and devices that are approaching clinical application and/or commercial development.
